It’s a familiar scene. You’re talking to a young person, but their attention is somewhere else, split between you, their phone, and whatever comes next on the screen. A conversation competes with notifications. A moment competes with a scroll.
The Courage to Grow: What Happens When Young People Step Outside Their Comfort Zone. In the comfort zone, things feel easy, but little changes. New skills, confidence, and resilience develop when young people encounter something unfamiliar and learn that they can navigate it.
There’s a moment most educators and parents recognise. A student stares at a test paper, eyes welling up. A teenager halfway up a hiking trail says, “I can’t do this.” A young person shuts down after making a mistake and quietly decides they’re “just not good at it.”Somewhere along the way, struggle became synonymous with failure. But what if it’s actually evidence that growth is happening?
When teachers and peers create environments of belonging, students are more willing to participate, ask questions, and explore ideas deeply. In other words, connection isn’t an “extra”, it’s the foundation that makes meaningful learning possible. Belonging isn’t just a warm feeling. It’s the fuel that powers engagement, collaboration, and growth. Without it, content falls flat. With it, learning comes alive.
It’s 7:30 p.m., and you glance across the lounge room at your teenager. The TV is playing, but they're hardly paying attention—eyes glued to their phone, thumb scrolling endlessly through TikTok. You gently try to start a conversation, asking how their day went. The response is vague, distant; their attention is caught somewhere between the videos looping on their phone and the dialogue on the TV.
Classrooms provide structured environments essential for foundational learning and development of critical skills. Yet, an increasing body of research indicates that incorporating nature-based education alongside traditional classroom methods can significantly enhance cognitive, emotional, and social outcomes for students.
Adulthood doesn’t happen at 18—it happens through experience. There’s no switch that flips when a young person turns 18, no secret key handed over at graduation. And yet, society often treats adulthood as if it arrives in a single moment—a milestone marked by age or academic achievement.
Imagine opening your child's school report to find something different from the usual grades and test scores. In our efforts to keep young people safe, are we robbing them of the experiences they need to grow? It’s a question more parents and educators are beginning to ask as we reflect on what children truly need to thrive in an uncertain world. For decades, we’ve been refining ways to keep young people safe—physically, emotionally, and socially. But somewhere along the way, our focus on safety may have gone too far.
